About the Woolworth
Located in the heart of downtown Nashville, the historic Woolworth Theatre is one of the city’s most culturally significant landmarks. Originally opened as an F.W. Woolworth department store in 1913, the building became nationally recognized during the Civil Rights Movement as the site of the 1960 Nashville lunch counter sit-ins led by students from local historically Black colleges and universities, including Fisk University and Tennessee State University. The peaceful student-led demonstrations played a major role in the desegregation of Nashville lunch counters and helped shape the broader movement for racial equality across the United States. Today, Woolworth Theatre preserves that important history while serving as a premier live entertainment venue in downtown Nashville, blending historic architecture, original design elements, and modern performances in a space that honors both music, culture, and civil rights history.
